Cochlostoma philippianum is a land-living snail species from the family of the forest cap snail (Cochlostomatidae) in the order Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm").

features

The right-hand wound case is 7 to 10 mm high and 3.3 to 3.9 mm wide. It is elongated-conical and comparatively slender with a thick truncated apex . The 8 to 9 well arched turns (8.8 to 10.5: Welter Schultes) only increase slowly but regularly and are separated from each other by a moderately deep seam. The comparatively narrow base is rounded. The navel is completely covered. The last turn climbs quickly and up to the mouth. The mouth is greatly expanded, rounded-ovoid to almost circular in the frontal view. The spindle edge is drawn out in the shape of an ear and lies on the penultimate handling.

The sculpture consists of strong, blunt ribs that alternate with fine but distinct stripes, usually one or two stripes. The ribs weaken towards the mouth; mostly only fine stripes are formed on the end turn. The ribs are crooked, slightly curved and colored white or dashed white. In the two known populations, however, there are also non-ribbed, only finely striped specimens.

The base color of the case is horn-colored to red-brown and has two, on the end turn three bands with red-brown spots. The two upper bands consist of approximately square spots, the lower band is often connected, but can also be missing. The peel is translucent, the surface only slightly glossy to matt.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The distribution area of the species in northern Italy extends from the former province of Udine to Lake Garda , in the north to South Tyrol . Wilhelm Kobelt also gives Sankt Peter am Ottersbach in Styria (Austria) as a place of discovery. This occurrence has not been confirmed since.

The animals live on the surface of limestone rocks, in the crevices or at the foot of these rocks.

Taxonomy

The taxon was set up in 1853 by Vinzenz Maria Gredler as Pomatias philippianum . Type locality is Rivoli Veronese ( Province of Verona , Italy). Wilhelm Kobelt transferred the taxon to the genus Cochlostoma Jan, 1830, he also endured two varieties. The Fauna Europaea accepts the taxon as an independent species Cochlostoma (Turritus) philippianum (Gredler, 1853).

Synonyms are:

  • Cochlostoma decipiens De Betta, 1870
  • Cochlostoma pachystoma De Betta, 1870

Danger

According to the assessment of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), the species is not endangered ("Least concern").
