The 2010 census counted 14,548 residents. Cocula is the administrative seat and the largest town in the municipality of the same name .

economy

Cocula is a growing area for sugar cane , corn , agaves , sorghum , chickpeas , alfalfa and mangoes . Pigs, poultry, goats and cattle are kept in particular.

history

Cocula was originally called Cocollán (Cocolán), which could be translated as wavy square . Around the 12th century , some families of the Koka tribe living in the kingdom of Tonalá found themselves exposed to so much hostility that they had to flee. A group led by Huehuetztlatzin founded Cocollán in the area of today's Acatlán de Juárez .

Cocollán was destroyed at the end of the 16th century . The population tried to settle a few kilometers further in the Tlajomulco area, but was again driven out by the local tribes. Eventually they settled on the heights of a mountain near Cocollán and stayed there until the Spanish arrived.

In 1520 Cocollán was an independent city under the rule of Chief Citlali (Engl .: the star ). Neighboring towns such as Acatlan, Villa Corona, Tizapanito, Xilotepetque and Tecolotlán had to pay tribute to Cocollán. In 1521 the Spanish army under Alonso de Ávalos conquered Cocollán and the surrounding cities and united them to form the province of Ávalos. A few years later - presumably in 1532 - the Franciscans persuaded the indigenous population to move to a nearby valley, where the village is still located today. Even today there are remains of the old city known as Cocula Vieja (Old Cocula).

Culture

Cocula is also known as La Cuna del Mariachi (the cradle of mariachi ) as it is believed that this style of music originated here in the 19th century . Many of the most famous Mariachi groups come from Cocula and the surrounding area.
