description

Cod. Pal. germ. 2, sheet 2r: Petrus Apian, Astronomicum Caesareum , "Petrus Apianus to the reader" (preface)
Cod. Pal. germ. 2, sheet 3r: Petrus Apian, Astronomicum Caesareum , "Das erst Capitel"

The Codex is a paper manuscript with 40 leaves, 34 of which are described. The foliation of the 17th century was done without counting the leaves; the blank sheets 34a-34e were later given a modern count.

The sheet size of the codex is 32.1 × 22.2 cm, with a writing space of 23.5 × 13.5–15 cm described with 25 to 28 lines per page. The continuous writing is a current font from the 16th century, the headings are in chancellery script . All sheets are written by one hand.

The cardboard binding and the parchment spine were added in 1970; an old copert has been preserved and is enclosed with the manuscript.

origin

Cod. Pal. germ. 2 was created between 1540 and 1581. The original of the manuscript, a print from the Apians printing house, was created in 1540. And when the Bibliotheca Palatina was cataloged in 1581, the manuscript was already part of the inventory of the monastery library of the Heidelberg Church of the Holy Spirit .

The manuscript was probably also created in Heidelberg; Count Palatine Ottheinrich owned a copy of the print, which later came to the Vatican Apostolic Library (BAV) and stayed there, by 1558 at the latest ( Ottheinrich binding from that year) . This copy could have been the direct template.

The writing language is High German with Bavarian writing peculiarities.

Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years' War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.

Content

On pages 1r – 34v the codex contains a very precise copy of the German print edition of Petrus Apian's Astronomicum Caesareum from his own printing house in Ingolstadt. The German-language print is a summary without pictures of his large compendium on the astronomical knowledge of his time, which he submitted in the same year 1540 in Latin as a print with many hand-colored representations.
