As Ottheinricheinband be book covers called up specifically for the Count Palatine and Elector Ottheinrich were made of the Palatinate (1502-1559) in the years 1546-1559.

history

The first Ottheinrich bindings are dated to the time of the Count Palatine and Duke in Weinheim (since 1546). Previously, the passionate book collector's bindings were only subsequently marked as his personal property. A field book of the Wundarzney shows the coat of arms of Ottheinrich, the abbreviated motto “MDZ” ( With the time ), his monogram “OHP” ( Ottheinrich Duke Palatine ) and the year of entry (1540) into his library. In contrast, the decoration of the leather binding was designed according to the bookbinder's ideas .

After 1546, in the second reign of Neuburg (from 1552) and when the actual Bibliotheca Palatina was built (1556–1559), the prince's book covers were uniformly designed. In 1550 the guidelines for the cover design were laid down in his certificate of appointment for the bookbinder Jörg Bernhard, who came from Görlitz . Another possible bookbinder is Petrus Betz from Heidelberg (since 1546).

Book clasps and metal corner fittings , known at the time as Spenglin and Bucklen , harmoniously round off the cover.

Metzger compares the importance of the Ottheinrich binding in binding research with that of the Ottheinrich building for German Renaissance architecture .
