The Codrington Library is a university library in Oxford , England . It belongs to All Souls College , a graduate college at the University of Oxford .

The library in its current form was donated by Christopher Codrington (1668-1710), a college fellow who had made a fortune through his sugar plantations in Barbados ( Codrington Plantations ). Codrington donated books to the value of £ 6,000, as well as £ 10,000 to expand the library (around £ 1.2 million today). the library building was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor , started in 1716 and completed in 1751, and has been in continuous use ever since. It was included on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest .

The collection currently comprises 185,000 volumes, around a third of which were written before 1800. The collection focuses on law, European history, church history, military history and classics. Sociological and historical science topics are currently being expanded. In contrast to most other libraries, access is available to all members of the university. The library also has a significant collection of manuscripts and early prints, which attracts scholars from around the world.

More recently, it has been discussed that the foundation was made possible due to slavery .
