Coenonympha corinna , also Corsican hay butterfly , is a butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of the noble butterfly (Nymphalidae), which occurs on Corsica , Sardinia and in the coastal areas of Tuscany . The specific epithet is derived from Korinna , a Greek poet from Tanagra .

Coenonympha corinna is the smallest coenonympha . The moths are bright yellow-red above with a broad black apex on all wings. On the forewing, the black is drawn in a submarginal strip up to the inner corner. The hind wings are monochrome yellow-red underneath with a small apical eye and a light, serrated post-disk band. The hind wings show a darker part of the root and in the lighter part of the edge small eye spots (ocelles) of very different training.
The subspecies elbana Staudinger , 1901 has an unsucleated apical eye above and larger ocelles on the hind wings below.
The green caterpillar has a darker, light-edged stripe on the back and pale, yellowish lines that are darker towards the top as a border.
The short, narrow pupa is gray-reddish with lighter, whitish areas.
Similar species
distribution
- C. corinna corinna occurs in Corsica and Sardinia from sea level up to 2000 meters, but mostly below 1200 meters. The form trettaui occurs on the island of Capraia and is the transition form to C. corinna elbana .
- C. corinna elbana Staudinger , 1901, also known as Elba hay butterfly , occurs on Elba , Giglio , Giannutri and in the coastal areas of Tuscany from sea level to 800 meters. Some authors regard it as a distinct species.
habitat
Coenonympha corinna lives in dry and grassy places with bushes, on light forest edges and on field edges.
Way of life
The caterpillars of Coenonympha corinna feed on the sweet grasses Carex distachya and Triticum caespitosum . They live in April, May and July, August.
Flight time
Coenonympha corinna corinna flies in several generations from mid-May to August, C. corinna elbana flies in several generations from early May to September.
