At 116 km in length, the Coghinas is the most important river in northern Sardinia and the third longest on the island.

The Coghinas rises near Ploaghe in the Alá Mountains and runs through the province of Sassari and the eponymous place before it flows into the Gulf of Asinara near Valledoria . There it forms the La Perla Blu lagoon .

Coming in from the Limbaraschlucht middle reaches formed is jammed in the Strait of Muzzone and forms the at Oschiri lying Coghinas lake . The dam , built in 1927, provides the lake with a capacity of 254 million cubic meters of water. At the lower reaches is the Lago di Casteldoria , another but smaller reservoir . The largest place on the river is Viddalba .
