Cohors I Bracaraugustanorum (Dacia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cohors I Bracaraugustanorum ( German  1st cohort from Bracara Augusta ) was a Roman auxiliary unit . It is evidenced by military diplomas , an inscription and brick stamps. In the inscription she is referred to as Cohors I Augusta Bracarum .

Name components

  • I : The Roman number stands for the ordinal number, the first ( Latin prima ). Hence the name of this military unit is pronounced as Cohors prima ...
  • Bracaraugustanorum : from the conventus Bracara Augusta . The soldiers of the cohort were recruited when the unit was established in the area of the conventus (iuridicus) Bracara Augusta (with the capital Bracara Augusta ).

Since there are no references to the additions to the name milliaria (1000 men) and equitata (partially mounted), it can be assumed that it is a Cohors quingenaria peditata , a pure infantry cohort. The nominal strength of the unit was 480 men, consisting of 6 Centuries with 80 men each.

history

The cohort was stationed in the province of Dacia inferior . It is listed on military diplomas for the years 122 to 167/168 AD.

The unit may have emerged from a vexillation detached from the Tribe Unit stationed in Moesia Province during the Dacian Wars of Trajan . The first evidence of the cohort in Dacia inferior is based on a diploma dated 122. In the diploma, the unit is listed as part of the troops (see Roman Armed Forces in Dacia ) that were stationed in the province. Further diplomas, dated from 129/130 to 167/168, prove unity in the same province.
