description

Late checkerboard autumn crocus ( Colchicum variegatum )

The late checkerboard autumn crocus is a perennial bulbous plant that reaches heights of 7 to 18 centimeters. The 3 to 4 leaves are linear-lanceolate, wavy and light blue-green. They measure 9 to 15 × 0.7 to 2.5 centimeters. The perigone lobes are spread out, pointed or blunt, glabrous, often turned at the end, almost not narrowed at the base and have a strong checkerboard pattern. They measure 40 to 60 (rarely 22 to 70) × 10 to 20 (rarely 5 to 25) millimeters. The scar runs down 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters.

The flowering period extends from October to November, rarely beginning in September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 44.

Occurrence

The late checkerboard autumn crocus occurs in southeastern Greece, the Aegean Sea, and southwestern and southern Turkey. The species grows in open fir and pine forests, on red soil between limestone blocks, in macchia and in juniper and heather bushes at altitudes of 150 to 1450 meters. One specimen was found on the coast near Bodrum (SW Turkey).

use

The late checkerboard autumn crocus is used as an ornamental plant in lawns, wooded edges and perennial beds and as a cut flower. It has been in culture since 1629 at the latest.
