history

In the years 1890-1892 the question of founding a new high school in Timisoara arose, as the Piarist high school was overcrowded and could no longer accept all applicants. In 1897 an agreement was signed between the Minister of Education of the Kingdom of Romania Iuliu Wlasici and the free royal city of Timișoara. This agreement served as the basis for the contract of August 1, 1897, which provided for the following:

  • The free imperial city of Timisoara pledges to leave a plot of 2400 square meters to the state for the construction of a high school. The property is made available by the demolition of the fortress wall between the warehouses of the Hunydi Castle and the "Transylvanian Barracks".
  • The city contributes 50,000 florins to the building costs of the school and deposited this amount with the tax authorities of Timişoara until the end of the financial year 1897
  • The city undertakes to continue to pay the agreed amount in favor of the Catholic piarist high school.
  • The city waives any right to a portion of the school fees forever.

The school began in 1897 with a first class and had 58 students: 24 Hungarians , 10 Romanians , the rest Germans , Serbs and others. Among the 24 students registered as Hungarians, nine were Jews . The current school building was given its purpose in 1903 according to the plans of the architect Ignatie Alpár .

After 1918, the Constantin Diaconovici Loga Lyceum quickly developed into an important center of Romanian culture in the Banat. In the school year 1933/34 a section with Serbian language of instruction was set up and a year later a section with teaching in Hungarian. In 1971 the Hungarian department was merged with Lyceum No. 1 and the Hungarian Béla Bartók Lyceum was founded.

During the socialist government, the lyceum was first renamed Nikos Beloianis Lyceum, then Școala Medie No. 1 . Since 1970 the Lyceum has been renamed Constantin Diaconovici Loga again . In 2005 the school consisted of 52 classes with 1370 students.
