Colin Marsh Marshall, Baron Marshall of Knightsbridge (born November 16, 1933 in Edgware , Middlesex , † July 5, 2012 in London ) was a top British manager and MP in the House of Lords .

Marshall attended University College School , a private school for boys in Hampstead , a northern suburb of London . At the age of 16 he left school without a higher degree and did not attend secondary schools later on.

In 1951 he began his career with the Orient Steam Navigation Company . He then worked for 23 years in various car rental companies , starting with Hertz and then Avis . Having worked in the United States , Canada , Mexico and the United Kingdom , he was promoted to Executive Vice President of Avis in 1971 and became President and CEO in 1976 . After acquiring Avis in 1979, he became Executive Vice President of Norton Simon Inc. and Co-Chairman of Avis.

In 1983 he was poached by John Leonard King and became CEO of British Airways . The main focus of his work was the preparation for the privatization of the airline in 1987. In 1993, in addition to his role as CEO, he also became chairman of the company, before Bob Ayling took over the role as CEO in 1996.

In July 2004 he resigned as Chairman of BA and Martin Broughton was his successor.

From May 1996 to July 1998 Marshall was President of the Confederation of British Industry and headed the CBI International Advisory Board. He has served on the Board of Directors of Birkbeck, University of London , Vice-President of the Advertising Association, member of the British American Business Council International Advisory Board, Councilor of the Institute of Directors and President of the Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council.

Between June 1998 and July 2003 Marshall was also Chairman of Invensys plc and 1995 to 2000 of Inchcape plc. From September 1999 to July 2003 he was Chairman of The Royal Institute of International Affairs ( Chatham House ), from October 2000 to October 2003 Chairman of The Board of Trustees of The Conference Board Inc., from January 1993 to May 2004 a member of the Board of HSBC Holdings plc and Chairman of the Queen's Club from 2007 to 2010 .

Other supervisory board mandates were the chairman of Pirelli UK plc (from September 2003) and Nomura International plc (from October 1, 2004). Between January 1, 2005 and January 1, 2007, he was also Chairman of the National British Tourist Board, VisitBritain .

Honors

In 1991 Marshall received the Tony Jannus Award for his achievements in civil aviation. He was raised to the nobility in June 1998 as Baron Marshall of Knightsbridge , of Knightsbridge in the City of Westminster as a Life Peer . Associated with this was a seat in the House of Lords, in which it could not be assigned to any of the parties ( Crossbencher ). In 2001 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In 1989 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bath .
