Colin Strand, 2nd Baron Strand

Colin Strang, 2nd Baron Strang GCB , GCMG , MBE (born June 12, 1922 in Belgrade , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † December 19, 2014 ) was a British peer , university professor and non-party politician .

life and career

Strang was born to William Strang and Elsie Wynne Jones († 1974). He attended Merchant Taylors College and St John's College of Oxford University . There he graduated with a Master of Arts in philosophy . Strand served in the Essex Yeomanry during World War II .

He was from 1951 to 1953 a lecturer in philosophy at Queen's University in Belfast and from 1953 to 1975 at the King's College of Newcastle University . At the latter, Strang was professor of philosophy from 1975 to 1982. From 1976 to 1979 he was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty there. He retired in 1982.

Strang received various orders and honors. He was Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB), Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (GCMG) and a member of the Order of the British Empire .

Strang lived in Stonesfield . In 2003 he lived in Lochranza , on the Isle of Arran .

Membership in the House of Lords

When his father died in May 1978, he inherited the title of Baron Strang and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . Its membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 . He did not run for one of the remaining seats. He was not listed in the Register of Hereditary Peers , which are available for by-election.

In 2013 (as of July 2013) he was not a member of the Hereditary Peers Association .

family

On July 3, 1948, Strang married Patricia Marie Avis, the daughter of Meiert Charles Avis. The family came from Johannesburg . The marriage ended in divorce in 1955. On April 21, 1955, Strang married Professor Barbara Mary Hope Carr († 1982), the daughter of Frederick Albert Carr, from London . From this marriage a daughter was born.

In 1984, Strand married Mary Shewell Miles, daughter of Richard Miles. Since he left no male offspring, his baron title expired on his death.
