Collegium Musicum (band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Collegium Musicum is a Slovak art rock music group that is primarily devoted to instrumental compositions.

history

Collegium Musicum was founded in 1970 as a trio around the organist Marián Varga and initially existed (sometimes as a trio or quintet) until 1979. Later the group appeared again in different line-ups, but always with Marián Varga. She became known with adaptations of classical works such as Homage to JS Bach (based on Bach's Sarabande con partite in C major BWV 990), Mikrokosmos by Béla Bartók or Concerto in D based on Haydn . But also his own compositions were on the repertoire .

Founded in 1970 as a trio, the line-up has changed over the years. In Amiga 1973 was published on 11 Hi no. Homage to Johann Sebastian Bach (8:00 min) in the cast Marián Varga, Fedor Frešo and Dušan Hájek. When recording the record Continuo (1977) the Collegium Musicum consisted of Marián Varga, Fedor Frešo, Dušan Hájek, Ľudovít Nosko and Karel Witz.

Most of the LPs were released by the (Czech) Slovak record company Opus in Bratislava .

A special feature of the group was that Marián Varga used a subharchord on some recordings , a very rare electronic musical instrument that was developed in the GDR in the 1960s . This instrument is also used on the LP “Zelená pošta”, which is now also available on CD. Varga used various synthesizers over the years, including the Minimoog . The music of the Collegium Musicum can best be compared to Emerson, Lake and Palmer .
