Marián Varga (born January 29, 1947 in Skalica , Czechoslovakia ; † August 9, 2017 ) was a Slovak musician and composer .

Life

From the age of seven he attended a music school and took private lessons in composition from Professor Ján Cikker . He later became a student at the Bratislava Conservatory , where he studied piano with Roman Berger and composition with Andrej Očenáš .

After three years he left the conservatory in 1967 and initially became a member of the rock band Prúdy . He later founded the first Slovak art rock band Collegium Musicum . Their repertoire consisted mainly of instrumental music, the themes of classical music by Haydn , Bartok , Stravinsky , among others interpreted, and (as "eufonia" z. From the album from his own works with the first hints of artistic postmodernism Konvergencie ) that his then-the basis Work became.

After the dissolution of Collegium Musicum (1979), Marián Varga decided to pursue a solo career and was one of the first Slovak musicians to devote himself to absolute improvisation , i.e. the composition of music in real time.

He also wrote songs, in collaboration with Pavol Hammel he released five albums and composed the first Slovak rock musical Cyrano z predmestia (Cyrano from the suburbs).

Awards

The Slovak President Andrej Kiska awarded Varga the Pribina Cross 2nd class on January 13, 2015 for his services to Slovak culture in the field of musical art. On his birthday on January 29, 2016 , Varga received the crystal swing (Krištáľové krídlo) for his life's work at a gala evening .
