Karel Kryl
Karel Kryl (born April 12, 1944 in Kroměříž ; † March 3, 1994 in Munich ) was a Czech songwriter and poet.
Life
He came from a family of printers. In the 1950s, the family business was liquidated by the communists . Kryl's dream was to become a potter like his great-grandfather. But soon he discovered his love for poetry and music. In 1968 he became famous overnight with his protest songs and persecuted by the communist regime. In 1969 Kryl emigrated to Munich. All of his later works appeared in exile. He initially worked as a freelance editor for Radio Free Europe and was then employed there in 1983. After the Velvet Revolution , he returned to his homeland for a short time in November 1989.
person
Kryl was often called the poet with a guitar . He was one of the most important Czech representatives of the protest song generation from 1968 to 1989. On March 3, 1994, just one month before his 50th birthday, Kryl died of a heart attack in a Munich hospital.
Works
His self-composed songs were not only short, powerful pamphlets, but also poetic, melancholy pieces of music. His first piece recorded with the band The Bluesmen was Nevidomá dívka (Blind Girl) (1968). His first LP was released six months after the invasion of the Warsaw Pact armies in Czechoslovakia . The title song with which he immediately became famous, Bratříčku, zavírej vrátka (Little Brother, Close the Door), was written spontaneously the night after the invasion.
In 2004 Daniel Landa released an album for the concert entitled “Večer s písní Karla Kryla pro český národ” “An evening with Karel Kryl's songs for the Czech nation” with cover versions, which have since been played in Landa's concert program and more often on the Czech radio program.
Awards
In 1994, Kryl received the silver commemorative medal from Charles University in memoriam for his contribution to “the development of the spiritual and moral support of the nation” . In 1995 he was honored with the František Kriegel Prize, the Czech Grammy Síň slávy and by the President Václav Havel with the Medal of Merit II.
