content

In Los Angeles a near dystopian future, the couple Katie and Will Bowman lives under a regime of military occupation, known as the Colony Transitional Authority (too German about colonial transitional government ). This is part of a larger power of extraterrestrial origin known as hosts or raps (short for raptors). Huge walls as high as skyscrapers and hundreds of meters thick, surrounded Los Angeles and other large cities, as Blocs (German blocks ) are called. Several buildings in the city show severe damage of the armed conflict during the invasion, known as The Arrival (The Arrival) originate. The occupying powers shown are all human, speak American English and - because of their black and red uniforms - are known as redhats . This militarized police force appears with automatic weapons and armored personnel carriers.

The Redhats maintain control by, among other things, separating loved ones, imposing curfews, carrying out arbitrary controls of citizens at gunpoint, limiting the use of cars (and replacing them with official transport / local public transport so that most citizens can Walking or cycling), spreading visual propaganda, imprisoning all opposed citizens and their families in a labor camp (the factory ), and monitoring people's entire everyday life with drones. Many medical problems, such as diabetes, have been classified by them as "unworthy of treatment" in order to reduce the population. In contrast, a resistance movement in the form of the so-called Resistance (German resistance ), or The Insurgency (German the uprising ) stirs .

The Bowmans, who are involved in the Resistance through Katie, are looking for their middle child (the younger of the two sons), Charlie, who was separated from them on arrival. Meanwhile, they try to cope with a changed world with little means. When Will is unexpectedly offered a job for the Redhats, Will unwittingly serves as a double agent for the Resistance.
