Color Me Blood Red is an American horror film directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis from 1965. Together with his works Blood Feast (1963) and Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964) it is one of the first splatter films and is the third part of Lewis' so-called "Blood Trilogy".

action

The gallery owner Farnsworth takes a painting outside and burns it. Blood drips from the frame while it's burning

The painter Adam Sorg has a crisis in his work. He doesn't like the colors and so he destroys his own works. His girlfriend Gigi reminds him of an important appointment with his gallery owner. This also criticizes Adam's colors.

The next day, out of anger, he again destroys a picture of himself. While cleaning up, Gigi cuts herself and smears the blood on the canvas. When Adam sees this, he is enthusiastic about the naturalness of the colors. Since Gigi's blood is insufficient, Adam cuts himself, but passes out from the loss of blood. When he woke up, Gigi had already made an appointment with the gallery owner. But the picture is not ready. Some blood is still missing. And so he kills Gigi and buries her behind the house. Then he finishes the picture and goes to his gallery owner. This is now totally excited. The art critic also praised the work as his best. He now challenges him.

Since the blood is gone again, he first plans an ambush on a couple. But the coincidence comes in handy, because another couple steals their pedal boats and so he kills the two, kills the man and kidnaps the woman. He bleeds them out and uses their blood for a new painting. Again, gallery owners and art critics are enthusiastic. But Adam doesn't want his art to be sold.

For the next picture he needs blood again. By chance, April, the daughter of one of Adam's fans, comes to the house and he persuades her to become a model. When he ties her up, she has reservations, but cannot free herself. Meanwhile, her friends have found Gigi's body. Just in time, they can overpower Adam and free April.

At the end, the scene from the beginning is shown again, this time with the explanation that it was Adam's cremation.

background

Color Me Blood Red belongs with Blood Feast (1963) and Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964) is one of the first splatter films. It is the third part of Lewis' so-called "Blood Trilogy", but never achieved the same level of fame as his two previous works. Like its two predecessors, it is a low-budget film and a typical trash film from the 1960s. From today's perspective, the effects appear comparatively harmless.

Like many of Lewis' films, Color Me Blood Red is also a rip-off and is reminiscent of the story of The Legacy of Prof. Bondi by Roger Corman . The film was made for about $ 30,000 in Sarasota , Florida .

reception

The film is widely regarded as Lewis' worst splatter film, which today seems comparatively harmless. However, due to its short running time, the amateurish acting actors and the improvised effects, it is still a cult film for horror, trash and splatter fans today.
