The franchise has been based in Denver since 2003.

Franchise identities

history

In 2003 one of the NLL's most traditional franchises was located in Denver, which in 1987 won the first ever championship of the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League. The league changed its name over the years to the Major Indoor Lacrosse League and finally the National Lacrosse League. In 2000 the franchise moved to Pittsburgh and two years later it was based in Washington, DC before moving to Denver.

The team reached number one in their division in the 2003 and 2004 seasons , but they failed to live up to expectations in the playoffs .

In 2005 they only ended up in third place in the West Division and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. In 2006 they were in second place in the west after the end of the regular season. In the finals they were able to fight their way through to the finals with victories in very close games, where they clearly beat the Buffalo Bandits with 16-9 and thus won the Champion's Cup for the first time .

The team is owned by E. Stanley Kroenke , who also owns the Colorado Avalanche from the NHL , the Denver Nuggets from the NBA and the Colorado Rapids from the MLS .

Former head coach Gary Gait retired in 2005 and became the first player to have his number honored with a banner hanging from the ceiling of an arena.
