Colostygia kollariaria , also called Kollars Bergwald-Blattspanner , is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Spanner family (Geometridae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 38 to 44 millimeters. In freshly hatched specimens, the forewings show a moss-green shimmer on a brownish background in some areas, especially in the males. Flown moths lose the greenish color elements very quickly. The midfield is darkened, as is the basal region and parts of the submarginal region . The midfield is widened near the front edge and constricted towards the rear edge. The females are mostly drawn less contrast, the contours are often blurred. In some Alpine regions , the drawing elements are generally indistinct and blurred for both sexes. The discal stain is sometimes only weakly highlighted. The hind wings are light gray in color and have a weakly indicated dark center line.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are gray-green in color and show red-brown longitudinal lines, whitish side lines and a dark wedge markings on the central five segments.
Similar species
The valerian tie-tensioner ( Colostygia laetaria ) is drawn with more contrast. The middle field is bordered with white lines. Freshly hatched specimens have a blue-green over-dusting that soon fades and turns into whitish tints.
Geographical distribution and occurrence
Colostygia kollariaria is found in the Alps and the Carpathian Mountains . The altitude distribution of the species is between 500 and 2000 meters. She prefers mountainous terrain.
Way of life
The flight time of the moths includes the months May to August, depending on the altitude. During the day the moths prefer to rest under overhanging rocks, sometimes at the foot of spruce tree trunks . At night they visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars mainly feed on the flowers of three-leaved valerian ( Valeriana tripteris ). The species overwinters as a pupa.
Danger
Colostygia kollariaria is listed on the Red List of Threatened Species as a species with geographical restrictions. In Bavaria it is not uncommon in places.
