The Columbia River Bridge , also Bridgeport Bridge , is a two-lane road bridge over the Columbia River at the southeast end of Bridgeport in Douglas County , Washington state . It runs along Washington State Route 17 and is operated by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
The 1,950 put into operation truss bridge is located a few hundred meters downstream behind the Chief Joseph Dam , and was from the United States Army Corps of Engineers as part of the construction project of the dam built (1949-1955). In 1952, maintenance of the bridge was transferred to the Washington Department of Highways (now WSDOT), but it remained the property of the United States federal government .
The bridge, resting on six pillars, consists of a 244 m long central truss - continuous girder , to which a girder bridge with a length of 61 m is connected on the south side and one with a length of 43 m on the north side. The continuous girder is designed as a strut framework with posts and an overhead roadway and forms the largest span of 91 m between the central river pillars . The two adjoining spans of the symmetrical girder are 76 m. The carriageway has a width of 7.9 m, to which an approximately 1 m wide walkway with railings connects on both sides.
The Columbia River Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 (NRHP #: 95000632).
