Bridgeport is a city ( City ) in Douglas County in the State of Washington , near the Chief Joseph Dam area. It is part of the Wenatchee - East Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area . As of the 2010 United States Census , Bridgeport had 2,409 residents.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of ​​2.72 km², which does not include water. Bridgeport lies within city limits for more than 1½ miles (2.4 km) on the banks of the Columbia River. Bridgeport is currently experiencing expansion and development of its riverside properties including the use of renewable energy.

The Chief Joseph Dam is located about 2.4 km upstream from Bridgeport. Bridgeport lies directly on the border with Okanogan County in the north-south oriented Rufus Woods Lake . The city's closest recreational opportunities are in Okanogan County north of the city.

history

The area of ​​what is now Bridgeport was settled by non-Indians in the late 19th century and was originally called Westfield. Some of the earliest settlers were Chinese prospectors who visited the banks of the Columbia River. Contractors bought the town in 1892 and renamed it Bridgeport because they were from Bridgeport, Connecticut . The city of Bridgeport was officially recognized as a local authority on March 21, 1910. The city experienced the strongest economic boom with the construction of the massive Foster Creek Dam , later renamed Chief Joseph Dam , which was built just outside the city limits upstream.

2010 Census

As of the 2010 census , Bridgeport had 2,409 residents, 673 households and 525 families. The population density was 885.8 per km ². There were 745 housing units at a mean density of 273.9 per km².

The population consisted of 57.4% whites , 0.5% Afro-Americans , 0.6% Indians , 0.4% Asians , 38.7% from other "races" and 2.4 % % from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 76.7% of the population.

Of the 673 households, 54.4% had children under the age of 18, 57.5% were run by married couples living together , 13.1% by single mothers and 7.4% by single fathers; 22% were non-families. 15.9% of the households were singles and 8.2% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.58 and the average family size was 4 people.

The median age in the city was 25.6 years. 37.4% of the population were under 18, 11.7% between 18 and 24, 26% between 25 and 44, 16.7% between 45 and 64 and 8.3 65 years or older. Of the population, 52.3% were men and 47.7% women.

Census 2000

As of the 2000 census , there were 2,059 residents, 624 households, and 497 families in Bridgeport. The population density was 764.4 per km ². There were 762 housing units at a mean density of 282.9 per km².

The population consisted of 60.81% white , 0.24% African American , 1.94% Indian , 0.19% Asian , 0.1% Pacific islander , 30.69% from other "races" and 6.02% from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 64.79% of the population.

Of the 624 households, 51% had children under the age of 18, 61.7% were run by married couples living together , 13.1% by single mothers; 20.2% were non-families. 17.1% of the households were singles and 5.9% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.3 and the average family size was 3.7.

The median age in the city was 26 years. 38% of the population were under 18, 10.3% between 18 and 24, 28.1% between 25 and 44, 16% between 45 and 64 and 7.6 65 years or older. There were 107.1 men for every 100 women, and 108.8 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.

All information on median income relates to the median. The median household income was US $ 25,531 and that of families was US $ 26,086. Men had a median income of US $ 22,333 compared to US $ 17,788 for women. The per capita income was US $ 10,302.
