Columns (pronounced columns from the Latin columna for " pillars ") is an arcade game that was developed by Sega and published in 1990. The game has similarities with Tetris . In Germany, the Sega Game Gear , comparable to Nintendo's marketing of the Game Boy together with Tetris, was delivered in the standard version with columns.

Game description

As in Tetris, the playing field consists of a rectangle in which the player arranges various pieces. He can also throw stones out of the game through certain assignments. The game ends if a stone touches the top edge of the rectangle.

There are differences in the way the game pieces work: They do not form different shapes, nor can they be rotated by the player (in "Super Columns" for Game Gear , however, rotation is possible). Each of these rows ("Columns") has three blocks (each represented in the game as a gem ), which are chosen on a random basis from six different ones. By moving the pieces horizontally and changing the order of the individual blocks, the player must try to create any row of at least three identical blocks in order to remove them from the playing field.

Part of the stimulus is a combo system (comparable to a chain reaction ). By removing blocks, it is possible for others to move up and again form a row of three identical blocks.
