Comitancillo is a place and a municipality in the department of San Marcos in Guatemala . The place is about 300 km northwest of Guatemala City and almost 30 km north of the departmental capital San Marcos in the highlands of the Sierra Madre at an altitude of 2,280 meters.

Comitancillo can be reached from the departmental capital San Marcos via a country road, from which a branch line branches off a few kilometers after La Grandeza in an easterly direction to San Lorenzo and from there continues north to Comitancillo. From the national road 1, which connects Quetzaltenango with San Marcos, there is a shorter direct connection to San Lorenzo and on to Comitancillo, which, however, is not yet fully paved.

Around 60,000 people live in the 113 km² Municipio Comitancillo, the vast majority of them in small rural settlements. Subsistence farming is the rule. In addition to the main town, the municipality consists of the rural communities (Aldeas) Chamaque, Chipel, Chixal, El Porvenir, Piedra de Fuego, Río Hondo, Sabalique, San Isidro, San Luis, Santa Teresa, Taltimiche, Tuichilupe, Tuilelen, Tuimuj and Tuixoquel with a total of around 60 hamlets. The Mayan ruin Chipel is a reminder of the cultural heritage of the Mam who lived here .

Adjacent municipalities are San Miguel Ixtahuacán in the north, Sipacapa in the northeast, Cabricán ( Departamento Quetzaltenango ) and Río Blanco in the east, San Lorenzo in the south, San Marcos in the southwest and Tejutla in the west and northwest.
