Sibinal is a place and a municipality in the department of San Marcos in Guatemala . The place is about 320 km northwest of Guatemala City and almost 10 km east of the border with Mexico in the highlands of the Sierra Madre at an altitude of 1,510 meters.
Sibinal can be reached from the departmental capital San Marcos via a country road that leads east of the Tajumulco volcano via La Grandeza, Serchil and Ixchiguán as well as over the 3,400 meter high Cumbre de Cotzil pass to the remote north of the department. Sibinal lies at the foot of the 4,093-meter-high Tacaná volcano , over whose crater the border between Guatemala and Mexico runs. Sibinal is usually the starting point for ascents of the Tacaná. Because of the relatively low location of the village, the ascent usually takes eight to ten hours.
Around 30,000 people live in the 176 km², economically underdeveloped Municipio Sibinal. In addition to the main town, the municipality consists of the rural communities (Aldeas) Checamba, Chocabj, San Andrés Cheoj, San Antonio Las Barrancas and Vega de Volcán as well as around 40 hamlets. Neighboring municipalities are Tacaná in the north, Ixchiguan in the east, Tajumulco in the south and the Mexican state of Chiapas in the west.
