Compsoptera jourdanaria is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Spanner family (Geometridae).

The wingspan of the moth is 28 to 36 millimeters. The upper side of the forewings is light brown to gray-brown in the basic color, sometimes with a slightly reddish-brown dust. Typical of the species are six white U-shaped drawing elements that start from the apex and become larger towards the center of the inner edge. There are several white longitudinal lines parallel to the front edge, which also run through a small black discoidal spot. The apex of the forewing is pointed, especially in female butterflies. Their wings are also narrower than those of the males. The hind wings are whitish without drawing, only slightly darkened at the edge. In females, they usually have a silky white sheen. The antennae of the males are combed on both sides, those of the females are thread-shaped.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are inconspicuously brown in color and look like a dry, broken branch when stretched out.

distribution and habitat

The nominate form Compsoptera jourdanaria jourdanaria occurs on the Iberian Peninsula , in southeastern France as well as in Algeria and Morocco . In Sardinia is subspecies compsoptera jourdanaria anargyra home. The species prefers to colonize warm grass and shrubbery landscapes.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation and are found in September and October. At rest they sit with tightly fitting, sometimes slightly crossed wings. You visit artificial light sources at night . The females lay the eggs in mirrors on thin branches. The caterpillars live in March and April. They mainly feed on the leaves of the real thyme ( Thymus vulgaris ).
