Remiremont Love Council

The Love Council of Remiremont or Concilium Romarici Montis is an anonymously written parodic controversial poem of the 12th century in 241 Latin verses.

Following the pattern of theological councils and in the style of the Minnehöfe , the question is negotiated in the Remiremont nunnery as to whether clerics or knights are better lovers. The opening ceremony includes the programmatic reading of the Ars amatoria Ovid , which is the gospel of the congregation. A cardinal ( Cardinalis Domina ) leads the formal disputation on behalf of Cupid , in which the nuns report their respective experiences with knights or monks, men and old women have to stay away from the council. The verdict of the Cardinalis domina is ultimately: only monks are allowed to be lovers of the nuns of Remiremont, violations of this command should be punished with excommunication .

For paleographical and stylistic reasons, the love council is dated to the 12th century. It is named after the monastery in Remiremont ( Romarici Mons ) in the Vosges Mountains (Diocese of Toul ), where the story takes place. The seal has survived in two manuscripts: In the Trier City Library , Hs. 1081 (probably in the middle of the 12th century) and in a prose version from Romersdorf , written in the 13th century, which is now in the Koblenz State Main Archive with the shelfmark 162, 1401 . The love council was first edited in 1848 by Georg Waitz based on the Trier manuscript. Wilhelm Meyer published a new edition in 1914 that took the second manuscript into account.
