plane

The Boeing 737-230 with the serial number 22635/774 and the aircraft registration D-ABHD had its first flight on June 15, 1981. At the time of the accident, the machine had completed 19,334 flight hours.

Flight history

The plane was chartered from a Turkish tour operator specializing in ethnic traffic . The pilots were the 48-year-old flight captain and former starfighter pilot Wolfgang Hechler and the 33-year-old copilot Helmut Zöller; he was a pilot flying . After two hours of flight time, the crew began the descent at around 7 p.m. to the Izmir-Adnan Menderes Airport, which was completed in 1987, and planned an instrument approach on the instrument landing system (ILS) for runway 35. The position is usually determined by directional (VOR) or non-directional radio beacons ( NDB) verified to ensure that the aircraft is not departing a sidelobe from the ILS; This was not done on flight 3782. The machine followed a sidelobe that was more than 35 degrees outside the actual approach course and finally collided with a hill about 10 nautical miles southwest of Izmir Airport at around 19:18 .

15 people died in the impact. A flight attendant probably initially survived, but died about three hours later when the rescue workers arrived.
