Conflict: Desert Storm 2 , published in North America with the addition of Back to Baghdad , is the second part of the video game series Conflict: Desert Storm for PC and PlayStation 2 , as well as GameCube and Xbox . The game belongs to the tactical shooter category and is played from the third-person perspective .

Historical background

The plot of the game revolves around the Desert Storm campaign in the second Gulf War in 1991. Elite soldiers of the US Army Special Forces played a major role in the fact that the Emir of Kuwait could be freed to prevent the Iraqi soldiers invading Kuwait City to preserve. In addition, the following decisive actions are on the account of the Special Forces:

  • Destruction of the early warning radar system at an-Nagaf
  • Victory over an entire division of the Republican Guard in the Saudi Arabian city of al-Khafji
  • Destruction of the SCUD missiles in northwest Iraq
  • Liberation of Allied Air Force members

people

The player has four different figures, which he can alternately control directly, or control via commands:

  • John Bradley is the leader of the elite team of four. He specializes in communication and handling the assault rifle and submachine gun . Another important part of Bradley's equipment is the laser target illuminator for capturing targets for air strikes.
  • Paul Foley is the sniper. His preferred rifle is the semi-automatic M82A1 Barrett, at short distances he uses the M9 Beretta 9mm pistol .
  • Mick Connors is a heavy weapon specialist. He can operate machine guns and anti-tank weapons and mostly uses the M60E-Light or the M249-SAW machine gun, or a LAW-66 or LAW-80 rocket launcher.

Game flow

The player must try to achieve all goals in every mission and get along without any loss through a sophisticated interplay between teamwork and the consistent use of the individual skills of the individual elite soldiers . The corresponding tactic can usually only be found after playing a mission repeatedly.

Multiplayer mode

With the game console versions of Conflict: Desert Storm 2 it is possible to do the missions together with up to four players in co-op mode ; each player takes on a team member. In the PC version, the multiplayer mode in the predecessor has been deleted without replacement.

criticism

In the test report for the PC version, Thomas Weiß, editor of PC Games magazine , criticizes the lack of multiplayer mode and, above all, the lack of variety and improvements compared to its predecessor: The game looks almost exactly like Part 1 and plays that way. The limited storage space and the cumbersome team management are also frustrating. Overall, Conflict: Desert Storm 2 received a 77% rating.

Udo Crnjak, editor at N-Zone , explains in issue 79 that the second part has been improved in all respects compared to its predecessor. Atmospherically the game was undoubtedly successful, only the high level of difficulty was to be criticized. The multiplayer mode for up to four players is called "awesome". The Gamecube version received an 85% rating in both single and multiplayer modes.
