Congreso is the name of a Chilean music group from the genre Fusión latinoamericana that has been active since 1969 . In the course of its existence, the band experimented with different line-ups with musical styles such as folklore , world music , progressive rock , fusion jazz , pop music and contemporary music . In the course of more than 40 years of existence, the group released 17 long players and received numerous awards.

history

Congreso's origins lie in the central Chilean city of Quilpué , where the group was founded in 1969. The core of the group, the three brothers González and Fernando Hurtado, worked together before (since 1964) in a rock band called Los Stereos , later Los Shadows and finally Los Masters . When Fernando Sazo joined the group, it changed its name to Congreso .

Together with bands like Los Jaivas , Congreso subsequently developed a special style of music that is characterized by elements of rock music and folkloric influences. Their first album, El Congreso , was released in 1971. During this phase the band was close to the Nueva Canción Chilena movement .

Even after the coup in Chile in 1973 and the subsequent closure of many cultural institutions, Congreso continued to operate in Chile. After their fourth album Misa de Los Andes had little success, three members left the band, including Fernando Sazo.

After more than a year, the band managed to get active again with new members and now turned to progressive rock . After Joe Vasconcellos left the band, Congreso concentrated on instrumental themes on the album Pájaros de Arcilla (1984), this album received more attention outside of Chile than in the band's homeland.

In 1986 Sazo returned to Congreso; Another change in the line-up brought Congreso stylistically closer to fusion jazz . After the return of democracy in Chile, they released Para los arqueólogos del futuro in 1989 , an album that featured a variety of instruments and lyrics about freedom. As the first album by Congreso, this work achieved gold status. In 1992 the band released two concept albums, the first based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child ( Pichanga ), the second for modern ballet and as an homage to the extinction of indigenous peoples in southern Chile ( Los Fuegos del Hielo ).

Controversies with record labels and parallel projects by many members of the band caused a less productive phase in the 1990s. Por amor al viento (1997) was released by an independent record label. Tilo González finally opened his own recording studio, La loca sin zapatos with lyrics by Víctor Jara and Pablo Neruda was released in 2001.

Given the rather low success of their music in Chile, the band tried their luck with a tour of the United States . The prestige gained in this way led to the invitation to the Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar 2005. In 2007, Congreso performed at the Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho with all current and former members still alive since its foundation. On the occasion of its 40th anniversary in 2009, the band gave concerts with the symphony orchestra of the Teatro Municipal de Santiago .
