Similar species
Due to the great similarity in the external appearance of the following species , a genital examination is advisable for a reliable determination .
- Conisania poelli Stertz , 1915
- Conisania albina ( Staudinger , 1896)
- Conisania arterialis ( Draudt , 1936)
- Conisania cervina ( Eversmann , 1842)
distribution and habitat
The distribution area is patchy in Central Europe . It stretches along the Baltic Sea coast and eastwards to the southern Urals . Preferred habitats are open, sandy grasslands and steppe areas.
Way of life
The moths fly in one generation per year. The main flight time is from May to July. They are mostly nocturnal and visit artificial light sources as well as bait and have sometimes been observed in the evening while sucking on the flowers of lilacs ( Syringa ). Mugwort species ( Artemisia ) are given as food plants for caterpillars living in July and August . On the Baltic coast , mugwort ( Artemisia campestris ) ssp. sericea preferred. Older caterpillars like to hide in the sand during the day. The species overwinters as a pupa.
Danger
In Germany, Conisania leineri occurs only in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , especially in the rear dune area on the island of Usedom , and was found there in large numbers over the years.
Subspecies
In addition to the nominate form Conisania leineri leineri , the following subspecies are distinguished:
- Conisania leineri bovina ( Staudinger , 1888)
- Conisania leineri furcata ( Eversmann , 1837)
- Conisania leineri pomerana ( Schulz , 1869)
