Connell Canyon was mapped by the United States Geological Survey as part of the Enterprise Hills survey in 1961-66 through field surveys and aerial photographs by the United States Navy . The gorge was named in 1966 by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Lieutenant Davis B. Connell, a U.S. Navy supply officer at McMurdo Station during Operation Deep Freeze in 1965 and 1966.
