With the mixture of two apparently contrary styles, the old Dutch and the northern Italian art of the quattrocento , he developed his own individual style.

The crucifixion of Christ from 1449 is one of his main works. The painter donated this work to today's Franciscan church in the city instead of a fee to obtain Salzburg citizenship . This emerges from an entry in the Salzburg Citizens Register in 1448. The name of the artist and his place of birth can also be taken from this, although the place cannot be clearly assigned today. Before that, the inscription “d Pfenning 1449 als ich chun” on the saddlecloth of the repoussoir figure of this work was thought to indicate the painter's title. Now everyone agrees that “Pfenning” means the donation. Neither the dates of life nor other circumstances in the life of the painter are known.
