Conrad Türst

Conrad Türst or Konrad Türst , also written Dürst (* around 1451 in Zurich ; † August 18, 1503 ) was a Swiss scientist and is best known as the author of the oldest map of Switzerland.

Conrad Türst, born the illegitimate son of a Zurich canon, studied medicine in Basel from 1470 and, after earning his master's degree, in Pavia , where he received his doctorate and doctorate in medicine in 1482. In 1484 he had also enrolled at the University of Ingolstadt. He then worked in Bern and Zurich. In Zurich he was appointed city doctor in 1489 as the successor to Eberhard Schleusinger after he had applied for a city doctor's position in Bern in vain in 1485 . He also worked as an astrologer for the Milanese aristocratic Sforza family and wrote a detailed iatromathematical work for Rudolf von Erlach (Schultheiss) . So far 6 medical-astrological reports have become known from him.

Between 1495 and 1497 he worked on a work on the ten-town Confederation . This work was written in handwriting in a German and a Latin version. One copy in each of the two languages contains a drawn map ; one copy is kept in the Zurich Central Library, the other in the Austrian National Library in Vienna. This south-oriented map on a scale of approx. 1: 500,000 shows in a stylized way the hills, mountains and rivers of Switzerland as well as the Swiss cities in the form of miniaturized, simplified views. It is the oldest known map showing the area of Switzerland in detail.

In 1499 he got a job as personal physician to Maximilian I von Habsburg . From 1503 at the latest, Türst was back in Zurich, where he spent his old age.
