Constantin Dumitrescu (cyclist)
Constantin Dumitrescu (born August 10, 1934 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian cyclist . His learned profession was a chemical laboratory assistant.
Athletic career
From 1953 to 1965 he took part in the International Peace Tour eleven times and came in second in 1956. In the same year he won a stage in the Tour d`Europe and started at the Summer Olympics in Melbourne. After a two-year break in the peace run, he was able to take 3rd place in 1962 and 6th place in the overall ranking in 1963. He was very popular - his nickname was "Dumi". In 1964 he won a stage at the Course de la Paix for the first time, in which he last participated in 1965. After that he tried his hand at the track chase driver, although he was Romanian champion in 1966, but only came back in the World Cup. He had excellent time trial qualities, so that in 1955, 1963 and 1966 he was able to conquer the Romanian national championship title in the individual time trial.
Dumitrescu was also a successful cross-country cyclist. He won the national title in 1957, 1961 and 1963.
In May 1967 he started in Paris at the Grand Prix de l`Humanité and used this opportunity to stay in France, to become professional and to compete in the Tour de France. However, the Romanian federation prevented a start in the international team, also in 1968, when he was still under contract in the Pelforth racing team with the Peace Ride winner Bernard Guyot. In 1969 and 1970 he was a professional as an individual in France (single driver without a team). He worked in a petrochemical company and lived in Marseille.
