Constantin Ferber (born June 9, 1520 in Danzig ; † February 15, 1588 there ) was mayor of Danzig from 1555 to 1588.

Life

Constantin Ferber was a son of the mayor of Gdańsk Eberhard Ferber . Since he converted to the evangelical profession in his youth , he was only able to take on offices in the city late. In 1548 he became a lay judge and in 1549 councilor of Danzig. Since 1554 Ferber was a representative of the city on the Hanseatic days .

In 1555 he was elected one of the four mayors of the city. In that year he acquired damaged areas near the city and founded the village of Constantinople . In 1557 Ferber negotiated with King Sigismund II August with other representatives of the city the privilege of free religious practice for Danzig. As early as 1558 he founded the Protestant Academic High School with Mayor Georg Kleefeld . In 1560 he had the Ferberhaus built in Langgasse.

In 1569 Ferber refused to allow the city of Danzig to join the Union of Lublin . The six months imprisonment that followed did not change his attitude. In 1571 he was present at the election of Heinrich von Valois as the new Polish king. When he refused to pay homage to the new King Stephen Bathory for Danzig in 1575, he besieged the city, but ultimately had to accept a compromise with it.

Constantin Ferber was a wealthy man from a young age who did banking in several European countries and lent money to the Polish and Swedish kings and the Duke of Prussia. Unfavorable economic developments, including the economic collapse of the Loitz and Lilie trading houses , brought him great losses and led to considerable financial losses in the last years of his life.
