Constantin von Grewingk
Constantine Caspar Andreas von Grewingk (January 2 * . Jul / 14. January 1819 greg. In Viljandi , Estonia; † June 18 jul. / Thirtieth June 1887 greg. In Tartu ) was a Baltic German geologist and mineralogist.
Life
His family had probably immigrated to Courland from Holland. From 1837 he studied mineralogy and geology in Dorpat and in February 1842 acquired the cand. Phil. with the work Die Mitscherlich 's theory of homeomorphism and its influence on mineralogy . He continued his studies in Berlin, in the winter of 1843/44 in Freiberg. In December 1843 he acquired the Dr. phil. in Jena with a thesis on chromium compounds .
In April 1846 he became curator of the mineralogical collection of the k. Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . He made some geological trips. Based on his reports, he was appointed professor of mineralogy and geology in Dorpat in 1854.
During his investigations he also carried out archaeological research. From an archaeological point of view, the scientific research of the Russian Baltic Sea provinces begins with him.
The Grewingk Glacier near Homer in Alaska is named after him.
