The Sigismund Column on Warsaw Palace Square

Constantino Tencalla (actually: Costante Tencalla , * around 1590 or earlier in Bissone / Switzerland ; † 1646 in Warsaw ) was an architect of the Roman early Baroque who worked at the court of the Polish kings.

Life

Tencalla may have worked as a stonemason and sculptor in Rome from 1610 to 1619 under his compatriot Carlo Maderno . Around 1630 he went to Poland-Lithuania with a group of other Italian architects , at that time still under Sigismund III. Wasa rules. At first he lived in Vilnius , where he and an uncle were involved in building the Casimir Chapel. His name is also mentioned in a contract signed in January 1635 for the construction of a large altar in Vilnius Cathedral. The facade design of the Theresienkirche in Vilnius is also attributed to him.

Around 1640 Tencalla then moved to Warsaw, where he became the first architect of King Władysław IV Wasa . One of his most important works here was the design of the Sigismund Column , which - born out of the spirit of the Counter Reformation - was to become the symbol of the Polish capital. He was also responsible for the redesign of the marble hall as part of the renovation of the royal palace .
