Contagem is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais , 21 km from Belo Horizonte . In 2010, 603,442 people lived in Contagem on 195.3 km². This makes it the third largest city in the state.
After a village existed here in the 18th and 19th centuries, the city of Contagem was founded on August 30, 1911. In the 1930s Contagem developed into a center of mining and is now the third largest city in Minas Gerais after Belo Horizonte and Uberlândia . In 1968 there was a strike by metal workers who protested against the Brazilian military dictatorship .
