Contraband was a short-lived so-called supergroup founded in 1990 , in which well-known rock musicians from the 1980s played.

history

The groups Ratt and Vixen performed together at an MTV Unplugged Show that was recorded on August 11, 1990 at the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan , New York , USA . The guitarist Michael Schenker played on this show as a replacement for Robbin Crosby as the second guitarist for Ratt. As a result, some of the musicians involved, namely Bobby Blotzer from Ratt, Share Pedersen from Vixen and Michael Schenker, came up with the idea of setting up a joint project. They hired the singer Richard Black from the group Shark Island and Tracii Guns from the LA Guns to complete the band.

The group released the self-titled album Contraband in 1991 , which was produced by Kevin Beamish and Randy Nicklaus, and reached number 187 on the Billboard 200 on June 29, 1991. The individual band members were hardly involved in the songwriting, the group mostly relied on titles by other authors such as Mark Spiro , Roy Brown or David Bowie ( Hang On to Yourself ). Only singer Richard Black is listed as a co-author of some songs. The album was released on the Impact American Records label and was distributed in Germany by EMI and in the USA by MCA Records .

All the Way from Memphis , a cover version of the Mott-the-Hoople song written by Ian Hunter , was released as a single . The title made it to number 12 on the mainstream rock charts in the US and also entered the charts in the UK.

The band went on tour through the United States in support of Ratt, then broke up for lack of success.
