The Contrafforte Pliocenico (literally: buttress from the Pliocene ) is a sandstone rock formation located in the metropolitan city of Bologna .

The formation forms natural fortresses in the valleys of Setta , Reno , Savena , Zena and Idice and is located in the area of the municipalities of Monzuno , Pianoro and Sasso Marconi (area of the Comunità Montana Cinque Valli Bolognesi ).

The rock formation is part of the former sea floor from the Pliocene and is two to seven million years old. The forces of orogeny lifted the sediments of what was then a bay .

The rock in the highest mountain peaks (e.g. Monte Adone - 655  m , Monte delle Formiche , Sasso della Glossina ) consists of coarse sandstone, while the deeper layers consist of soft clay and often form gorges . All of these rocks are rich in marine fossils .

The Contrafforte Pliocenico is interesting not only for the geologist, but also for the biologist. One finds a comparatively undestroyed environment with a number of stone, meadow and forest habitats , which are very different from each other. Here, for example, still rare bird species such as the peregrine falcon , tree falcon and Lanner falcon , the honey buzzard , the goat milker and the Montagu's Harrier can be found.

A nature reserve is planned in this area ( Riserva del Contrafforte Pliocenico ), which will have an extension of approximately 757  hectares .
