The Cook Landing Site in Waimea on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i marks with a plaque the place at the mouth of the Waimea River into the Pacific, where James Cook was the first European to set foot on one of the Hawaiian islands on January 20, 1778 . The exact location of the landing is today due to silting likely further inland. In 1928 a statue of James Cook was erected in memory of this event on the central square of the small town of Waimea for the 250th anniversary. The Russian fort is located nearby over the river .
On December 29, 1962, the site was designated a National Historic Landmark . On October 15, 1966, the Cook Landing Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
