Coordinates: 15 ° 28 ′  S , 145 ° 15 ′  E The Cook Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 105,724 km² and has about 4200 inhabitants.

geography

The Shire is located in the northeast of the state and occupies much of the Cape York Peninsula . It is about 1,560 km from the capital, Brisbane .

The largest city and the administrative seat of the LGA is the city of Cooktown on the east coast with around 1751 inhabitants (2631 including the surrounding area, as of 2016). The central location of the northern part of the Cape York Peninsula is Coen (328). Smaller towns ( townships ) are Marton, Lakeland (299), Laura (151), Portland Roads, Ayton and Rossville (Bloomfield, 403).

history

As early as the 1840s, researchers roamed the northeastern peninsula. The natural resources in the area quickly promoted settlement and with Cooktown, founded in 1876, it had its most important port. The Cook Shire was created in 1919 from the Hann Shire and the Daintree Shire, in 1932 Cooktown was added, which had been independent until then.

administration

The Cook Shire Council has seven members. The Mayor and six other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
