The Coolen Streicher are a Hamburg children's orchestra that was founded in 1993 by the two violinists of the Salut Salon quartet , Angelika Bachmann and Iris Siegfried . Around 30 children between the ages of 5 and 19 play violin, cello, viola and double bass together in the orchestra. The cool strings are one of three children's projects by Salut Salon.

The concept

The music-pedagogical concept on which the cool strings are based enables children and young people of different levels to make music together. The pieces - the repertoire of different genres ranges from Bach to Tango - are arranged in such a way that each child plays the voice that suits their abilities - from plucking to bowing empty strings to demanding voices. A selection of arrangements by Angelika Bachmann has been published under the title “Flexible Strings” ( Breitkopf & Härtel ). The nucleus of the orchestra were children who Angelika Bachmann and Iris Siegfried taught during their school days. "Die coolen Streicher" made their first appearances in Iris Siegfried's parents' house, in the Hamburg district of Tonndorf . They played their pieces by heart and thought that was cool (hence the name).
