Copșa Mare (German Groß-Kopisch , Hungarian Nagykapus ) is a village in the Sibiu ( Hermannstadt ) district in Romania. It belongs to the municipality of Biertan .
location
Copşa Mare is located about in the middle of Transylvania in a southern side valley of the Târnava Mare ( Great Kokel ). The next larger cities are Mediaș (about 15 km to the west) and Sighișoara (about 20 km to the northeast).
history
The valley in which the municipality is located was inhabited by Szeklern people until 1238. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1289. It was on Königsboden and was a village of the Transylvanian Saxons . In the 15th century, Groß-Kopisch was granted weekday and fair rights.
population
The place was shaped for centuries by the Transylvanian Saxons . In 1850, 675 of the 1218 residents were Germans. Their number decreased slowly after the Second World War, after the revolution of 1989 , when they emigrated to Germany . In 1992 there were still 482 people living in Copşa Mare, of whom 37 described themselves as German, 372 as Romanians , 53 as Gypsies and 20 as Hungarians .
traffic
The place is located on a dirt road that branches off from the national road 14 running in the Kokel Valley and ends in Copşa Mare. Public transport does not affect the place (as of 2005). The nearest train station is about 15 km north of the town on the Bucharest-Oradea railway line .
Attractions
The center of the village is built around 1330 pillar basilica in the 16th century by towers and walls of fortified church was completed.
