Copiapoa bridgesii is a species of the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the English-born plant collector Thomas Bridges .
description
Copiapoa bridgesii grows individually or in loose groups. The short cylindrical to cylindrical shoots are grass green and 20 to 40 centimeters high with a diameter of five to eight centimeters. The 8 to 12 ribs are straight, blunt and slightly humped. The small areoles are close together and partially flow into each other. The thorns are black to brown, graying with age. There are one to three straight, protruding central spines 1.5 to 5 centimeters in length and five to ten sub-radiant radial spines 1 to 2 centimeters in length.
The funnel-shaped yellow flowers are wide open. They are three to four inches long.
Distribution and systematics
Copiapoa bridgesii is common in Chile in the Región de Antofagasta between Barquito and Taltal.
It was first described in 1847 as Echinocactus bridgesii by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer . Curt Backeberg introduced the species to Copiapoa in 1959 . Another synonym is Copiapoa marginata var. Bridgesii (Pfeiff.) AEHoffm. (1989).
