Copiapoa conglomerata is a species of the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet conglomerata comes from Latin and means 'aggregated'.

description

Copiapoa conglomerata grows strongly sprouting in hemispherical clusters up to one meter high and with a diameter of up to two meters. The rather densely packed shoots are gray-green and measure 8 to 12 centimeters in diameter. They are bare and have a flat top that is completely covered with felt. The 9 to 12  ribs are straight, blunt, somewhat broadened at the base and 2 to 3.5 centimeters high. The slightly raised areoles are almost round. They are covered with dense, long, yellowish-brownish felt. The coarse and somewhat rigid thorns are light yellow to brownish, graying with age. They are straight to curved, sometimes also clawed. There are two to five central spines with a length of two to six centimeters and seven to ten lateral spines with a length of 1.5 to 5 centimeters.

The fragrant flowers , open during the day, are pink-yellow to light yellow or yellowish-white and 2.5 to 3 centimeters long. The greenish red fruits contain two millimeters long, black, shiny seeds .

Distribution and systematics

Copiapoa conglomerata is widespread in Chile in the Región de Antofagasta near the city of El Cobre, east of the fog zone. After an earthquake , when the El Cobre dam burst on March 28, 1965, the city and thus also the type location were completely destroyed.

It was first described in 1860 as Echinocactus conglomeratus by Rudolph Amandus Philippi . Hans Lembcke presented the species to Copiapoa in 1966 .

The use of the name is controversial. Graham Charles and David Richard Hunt make the species a synonym for Copiapoa solaris and use the name Copiapoa humilis subsp. For the plants designated by Edward F. Anderson . varispinata .
