Copiapoa fiedleriana is a species of plant in the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German master carpenter and cactus lover Rudolf Fiedler from Berlin.
description
Copiapoa fiedleriana grows individually or with many heads with large fleshy roots. The spherical shoots are gray-green and 5 to 8 centimeters high and also large in diameter. The 15 to 20 ribs are straight, slightly compressed at the sides and humped at the same time. The areoles are circular to oval, gray and clearly separated from each other. The thorns are blackish or grayish brown in color. Central spines are largely absent. The four to eight stiff radial spines are straight to slightly curved and up to three inches long.
The pure yellow flowers are 2.5 to 3 inches long. The fruits are spherical.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Copiapoa fiedleriana is common in Chile in the Región de Atacama from Huasco to north of Carrizal Bajo .
It was first described in 1903 as Echinocactus fiedlerianus by Karl Moritz Schumann . Curt Backeberg presented the species to Copiapoa in 1936 . Further synonyms are Copiapoa pepiniana var. Fiedleriana (K.Schum.) Backeb. (1959), Copiapoa coquimbana var. Fiedleriana (K.Schum.) AE Hoffm. (1989), Copiapoa megarhiza var. Echinata (F. Ritter) AE Hoffm. (1989) and Copiapoa megarhiza subsp. echinata (F.Ritter) Doweld (2002).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
