Copiapoa rupestris is a species of the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet rupestris comes from Latin and means 'growing on rocks'.
description
Copiapoa rupestris usually grows up to 50 centimeters high forming cushions. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots are green and measure 5 to 10 centimeters in diameter. The 10 to 17 ribs are straight and clearly divided into cusps. The white areoles are circular and up to an inch apart. The straight to slightly curved spines are white to yellow or sometimes black in color. One to six central spines and seven to twelve radial spines are distinguished.
The fragrant flowers are yellow or reddish. They are 3.5 to 4.2 inches long. The fruits are spherical.
Distribution and systematics
Copiapoa rupestris is widespread in Chile in the Región de Antofagasta between Cifuncho and Taltal near the coast.
It was first described in 1963 by Friedrich Ritter . Synonyms are Copiapoa desertorum var. Rupestris (F.Ritter) AEHoffm. (1989, incorrect name ICBN -Article 6.6, 11.4), Copiapoa desertorum var. Rubriflora (F.Ritter) AEHoffm.
