Corby Castle is a country estate of the Howard family at the south end of the village of Great Corby in northern Cumbria , England .

history

It was originally built as a red sandstone tower building in the 13th century by the noble Salkeld family, who also own the nearby Salkeld Hall from the same period. It was sold in 1611 to Lord William Howard , the third son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk , who added a two-story L-shaped building to the Peel Tower .

The current facade was built between April 1812 and September 1817 by the architect Peter Nicholson for Henry Howard . Henry Howard had previously inherited the estate from Sir Francis Howard , Lord William Howard's second son.

In 1981 Corby Castle was used as a main filming location of a five-part BBC miniseries: In the film adaptation of Wilkie Collins The Woman in White played Diana Quick , the Marian Halcombe .

Corby Castle was sold in 1994 by Sir John Howard-Lawson and Lady Howard-Lawson to the Northern Irish businessman Edward Haughey, Baron Ballyedmond . Most of the furniture was auctioned off by Phillips of Scotland in 1994. Edward Haughey, a Life Peer , has completely renovated Corby Castle and used it for family and professional purposes.

The listed Corby Bridge from 1834 is nearby.
