Corixa punctata is a bug from the family of row bugs (Corixidae). The species lives in stagnant waters such as ponds or ponds from Europe to Central Asia .

features

The bug reaches a body size of 13 to 15 millimeters. The body of this type of bug is built "flat boat-shaped" to adapt to its aquatic way of life. The dark background of the upper side of the body is characteristic light dotted on the wings. The species has 16 to 20 horizontal stripes on the pronotum . The hair-fringed hind legs serve as rowing legs. The front legs are short and have a shovel-shaped foot link. Under the pronotum, the wings and the underside of the chest ( thorax ) and abdomen ( abdomen ) there is a reserve of air that is renewed from time to time by sticking the head out of the water. The wings are well formed and fully functional. You can even fly straight out of the water. The strong rowing legs pierce the surface of the water in order to spread the dry wings. This species is mostly found in high numbers of individuals. Corixa punctata is capable of stridulation . The sound organ is a shrill field on the thighs ( femur ) of the front pair of legs. The hearing organ ( tympanic organ ) is formed on both sides of the mid-chest (mesothorax) in both sexes and is surrounded by air. The chants are especially practiced during the mating season.

Way of life

In spring, the bugs' courtship begins. Before mating, the males stridulate by stroking their front feet, which are covered with one or two thorns, over the sharp edges of their heads. Singing individual males stimulates the entire male population. The eggs are usually glued to aquatic plants. Five larval stages are passed through. In July the new generation has grown up.

This type of bug lives phytophagus on algae, which are shoveled in with the front, enlarged pair of legs.
